F1 hybrid, or first filial generation, is a genetic term used to describe the first generation offspring of clearly different types of parents. Subsequent generations are referred to as F2, F3, and F4. This term is commonly used to describe Wagyu cattle that are bred with a different breed with distinct characteristics. For example, offspring resulting from breeding a 100% Angus with a 100% Wagyu would be considered F1 (50% Wagyu and 50% Angus). If this F1 hybrid were then bred with a 100% Wagyu, the result would be F2 (75% Wagyu and 25% Angus). If this F2 were bred with a 100% Wagyu, the result would be F3 (87.5% Wagyu and 12.5% Angus). Finally, if this F3 were bred with a 100% Wagyu, the result would be F4 (93.75% Wagyu and 6.25% Angus).
